Albuquerque winters are relatively mild, however, a snowstorm or cold snap are always a possibility. It is wise, therefore, to protect young trees and shrubs with a thick layer of mulch in order to prevent the tender roots from freezing. Continue to water your trees, shrubs and perennials once a month, keeping in mind that many xeric plants will not need watering during the winter.
Beat the winter blues with beautiful houseplants and seasonal bulbs such as amaryllis and paperwhites.
WINTER PLANTING!
One of the benefits of our mild winters, is that the soil does not freeze completely. This means that trees, perennials and shrubs can be planted all year long. Planting your trees and shrubs in the Fall and Winter can actually be beneficial to their health because there will be minimal shock and a susbstantial period of dormancy will encourage strong root growth for next Spring. If you want to plant trees or shrubs during the colder months, apply root stimulator and know that in order for your new addition to survive, you must commit to watering during the winter.
