Planting in Albuquerque:

High Altitude

Albuquerque is 5,000ft and higher , which means that the air is thinner and the sun intensity is stronger.

Temperature Fluctuation

It is common for the day to night temperature range to vary 30 to 45 degrees. Apply mulch to keep the soil moist and cool during the hot summer months.

Low Precipitation

Due to our inland location and being surrounded by mountains, Albuquerque is very dry. The average rainfall is between 10 to 12 inches per year, with a significant amount of rainfall evaporating before it hits the ground.

Planting Zone

Because of our cold winters and hot summers, it is useful to know both the cold-hardiness zone and the heat tolerance zone.

Albuquerque is in zone 7 and 7a for cold tolerance, so choose plants for zones 1 through 7. Albuquerque is in zone 9 for heat tolerance. This system will be phased into use on plant tags within the next few years.

Soil

The soil in Albuquerque is alkaline and often nitrogen deficient. Soil Acidifier + Iron works best because it helps release the iron from the soil. Add nitrogen rich manure in late fall to give the nitrogen time to break down into the soil.
